Warm water aquaria

We have several rooms dedicated to keeping fish in warm water (around 25°C). Two of them are in Bern at the IEE and three of them are at Eawag in Kastanienbaum near Lucerne. The aquaria system consists of a total of 500 aquaria containing about 56'000l of water. The larger rooms have a central filtration unit with a sedimentation tank, sand-filter, bio-filter, and a UV-C unit to maintain optilmal water conditions for our fish. The aquaria in the smaller rooms are filtered with an air-filter powered by a centralized compressed air system.

Our aquaria vary in size from small 20l breeding tanks up to 6m long tanks and a large 4700l circular tank for behavioral experiments.
